Doesn't work for me May 28, 2009 K. Hooper 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
My fridge's ice maker turns out crescent shaped ice cubes and they don't work well with this machine. The ice went round and round in the shaving chamber but rarely engaged the shaving blade. There just isn't enough downward pressure to force the ice onto the blade.
Update: I went out and bought some ice cube trays hoping that the size or shape of the ice cube was a factor. No luck, this thing still doesn't work so I'll be returning it.
Not Impressed April 19, 2009 Gabrielle M. (Washington State) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I normally use the Back to Basics ice shavers, the one where you have to press the ice cylinders down by yourself while pressing the button on top to get the shaved ice. And even THAT was easier than this machine was. My old one's motor was wearing out so we bought this one thinking it'd work better and/or last longer. I couldnt believe how horribly it performed and after nearly 5 minutes we didnt even end up with enough "snow" to make a decent snow cone for my four year old. I would much rather have to hold a button down for less than a minute and get a full snow cone than wait 20 minutes for a mostly melted tub of ice chips.

Worst Hamilton Beach product thus far, and that says a lot. This machine is completely incapable of shaving your typical half-circle ice cube. And with crushed as (as from a blender) it gets stuck.
I wish I would have read reviews!!!!! December 27, 2009 G. Evans Jr. (Portsmouth, Virginia USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I really wish I would have taken a few minutes to read through the reviews. I am so DISAPPOINTED!!!!! This machine is a piece of crap!!! After less than 10 uses the plastic piece that makes it "spin" SNAPPED into three pieces. I tolerated having to shift the ice around and "shake" the machine a little (as was suggested in the "user manuel")but then to just break apart. I am glad I did not spend a lot of money. Not that I can afford to throw away $30.00 every ten days. You can bet I will be writing to Hamilton Beach also. Don't waste your money on this. Use a hammer and a platic bag it not only works better but the bags are cheaper to throw away when they "break". I will remember to read the reviews from here on out.
You can Shave Ice faster with a Razor blade August 10, 2009 Larkhall (FL) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Why oh why do I forget to read the Amazon customer reviews?
Watching the ice spin and spin AND SPIN around was semi-entertaining for the first 5 or so minutes. Then on to readjusting the ice in the chamber over and over.
By the time it finally got shaved into the "slushie - fine consistency", the ice was in my opinion, still too big for drinking, so into the blender it all went.
I guess if you want to blend ice faster you can shave it down and then toss it in a blender but then you have two appliances to clean up.
Overall, disappointing.
