5 out of 5 stars Easy and Versatile!   January 22, 2009

We bought this machine to make cool treats on hot summer days. The machine comes with the motor base, a blade housing, a cup, a lid, and a spoon/straw. It does not include any syrup. We bought extra cups so each of us could have our own. You make the slushie by filling to the markings on the cup...first the syrup, then the water, and last, the ice. Then you screw the blade housing to the top of the cup, flip the cup over, put it in the machine, and twist to turn the machine on. In about 20 seconds, you have a slushie! Twist back, unscrew the blade housing, screw on the lid, and enjoy. The only cleaning you have to do is the cup pieces and blade. Note: You really need to use small ice cubes or crushed ice for this. The cup is much smaller than a blender, and the contents of the cup need to be able to move around to blend properly.

My youngest is only two years old and I really didn't want him drinking a big slushie. I had a pretty ripe banana and got to thinking...so I cut up the small banana, added some strawberry yogurt, milk and ice, and blended. Well, he enjoyed the smoothie as much as the kids enjoyed the slushies. In fact, they decided the next time they wanted smoothies, too. We made strawberry banana, banana, and chocolate banana. We loved them! I also remembered a recipe I used to make in the blender and decided to try that, too. Small pieces of watermelon, a bit of sugar and a bit of lime juice, some water and ice...watermelon coolers! Our slushie machine turned into a summer drink machine. The directions have a few good ideas, like using the cherry syrup with ice, and cola instead of water for a cherry cola slushie. Use your imagination and your family's preferences for some great treats!

I have found the syrups, when added to their directions, are sweet enough but not super sweet. You can add more or less according to your own preferences. They also have sugar free syrups and even daiquiri syrup. I have seen a few available here, and the company, Focus Electrics, also sells them. We've only had ours for about a month but it is holding up great. I have no complaints!

5 out of 5 stars The best smoothie maker out there!   September 3, 2009

I have found the Back to Basics Slushie Maker to be the best little blender for smoothies that I have ever owned to date. I have a larger blender and have gone through two or three others over the years, but they either fall apart very quickly, do a mediocre job of making a smoothie, or are high maintenance to use and clean. And forget about getting a professional blender for several hundred $$! This gizmo is super easy to use, and even provides measurements for your ingredients on the cup. Just add your ingredients (I use juice, frozen or fresh fruit, a little yogurt, crushed ice), screw on the blender blade piece, turn over, insert into the motor unit and turn slightly. The blender automatically does its job and does it very well. No buttons to push or settings to worry about. The cup also functions as your drinking cup, so you don't have to pour it into another. A plastic straw is included. This thing is also super easy to clean, although you don't want to put it in the dishwasher. The only negative is that it only makes one cup at a time. But you can purchase additional cups separately for the entire family. I highly recommend this for those that like smoothies and don't want all the hassles that are found in larger, more expensive models.
