Amazon.com Review This ice-cream machine makes soft-serve ice cream for cones, sundaes, or for piping into cannoli shells that will rival that sold at the local ice cream parlor-plus it makes fruit slushies or frozen cocktails as well. The 5530 produces 1 quart or 8 to 10 cones of ice cream in a mere 10 to 20 minutes and is a fun way to serve dessert at summer barbecues or kids' birthday parties. The unit stands 19 inches tall when assembled and comes with a patented freezer canister that must be pre-frozen for at least 8 hours before creating a dessert. The canister has walls that are liquid-filled for even freezing and that are double insulated to keep the bowl colder for a longer period of time. When ingredients are ready, the canister pops into the body compartment. The stir paddle fits inside the canister and the plastic lid locks onto the top. The lid is clear for checking that desserts reach the proper custard-like thickness and has an opening for easily adding ingredients; however, chunky ingredients, such as candies or nuts, should be added afterwards as they can clog and damage the soft-serve spout. The compact 20-watt motor fits onto the lid and the power switch starts the action. With the ice cream maker running, cooks pour their mixed recipes through the top of the lid and wait anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes for the ingredients to reach the proper consistency. Soft-serve desserts dispense through a spout just below the ice cream maker's body by pushing down on a lever. The sturdy base prevents the ice cream maker from tipping during mixing and its feet are spread wide apart to accommodate a large sundae bowl. The device specifies in its instructions that it requires its canister to be stored in a freezer at a temp of -10C/3F or lower. Notice, this is lower than the 0C/32F to make ice. If your freezer will not go this low, don't buy the product, if you don't know how low your freezer temp will get check before you buy the product. If the canister is not frozen at a low enough temperature the product will not perform satisfactorily. This information should be made clear before purchase.

Would not recommend this machine. Soft Serve never got hard enough to serve. The handle on the machine would not release any of the soft slush that accumulated after running for forty five minutes. Just not a good machine. Canister was frozen for over 18 hours at zero degrees. Machine was returned the same day it was received. Just not as advertised. Should not have to pay for the RETURN!

I'm enjoying a bowl of perfect soft-serve right now. And this is the first time I've used the machine. I guess the low ratings are from people who are just clueless. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS! Make sure you keep the freezing canister in your deep freeze for 24 hours! Make sure your ice cream mix is fully chilled (overnight in the fridge)! DUH! THAT'S ALL THERE IS TO IT.
Now, if this sounds too complicated for you, just go to Dairy Queen, but this softserve (the booklet's plain vanilla recipe) is as smooth and tasty as anything I've ever bought. And I know exactly what's in it! I actually substituted Splenda for the sugar to reduce the carbs and still got unbeatable results.
Get one - it's cool!

This is a very attractive gadget but, like the previous reviewer, I feel it doesn't live up to its billing. I froze the container for more than 24 hours and yet the ice cream never firmed up enough to serve although the machine was left to churn for almost an hour. I may as well have mixed the recipe and just stuck the goop in the freezer for all that the machine did.

Like the others I tried to follow directions that came with the machine, but it did not freeze. I did find out that if I put the ice cream mix in the freezer for a few hours before putting in the machine it would make soft ice cream that will work in a cone. My other problem was some small plastic parts that keep getting lost in the ice cream and have been found while eating. I don't think that this is very safe. I thought that it would be a little better product.
